NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research
NIOZ is the national oceanographic centre of the Netherlands. The institute is part of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
The mission of NIOZ is to gain and communicate scientific knowledge on seas and oceans for understanding and sustainability of our planet. The institute also facilitates and supports marine research an education in the Netherlands and Europe.
NIOZ is active in three areas to fulfill this mission
- Research
- Education
- Facilities
Four basic disciplines of oceanography
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Geology
Five multidisciplinary themes
- Wadden Sea & North Sea - How can we improve the quality of our coastal systems?
- The open ocean - The open ocean ecosystem: How does it work?
- Sea floor dynamics - How can interactions between physical, chemical, biological and geological processes lead to different types of sea floor?
- Sea & Climate - What will change at sea?
- Biodiversity - What is the role of species in ecosystems?
