Royal Dutch Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ)

The NIOZ is one of the largest oceanographic institutes in Europe. Its primary task is performing multi-disciplinary scientific sea research, whereby close attention is paid to the coastal and epicontinental seas as well as the open ocean. Physicists, chemists, geologists and biologists work closely together in their research. Studies from the NIOZ are often used for determining policy with respect to the North Sea and Wadden Sea. In 2006, a close cooperation began between the NIOO and the NIOZ, under the name FOKUZ (Dutch combination for Fundamental Research of Coast and Sea).
The NIOZ was founded in 1876 and now falls under the NWO (Dutch Organization for Scientific Research). The research can be divided into four main themes: the conversion and transportation of particles and energy in the sea, the transportation of particles in the sediment, ecology and biodiversity of marine fauna and flora and temporary changes in the marine systems and climate changes. In addition to the research institute on Texel, the NIOZ also possesses a number of research vessels.
Studies made by the NIOZ are further expanded elsewhere under the following chapters:
eutrophication of the sea
decomposition of foam algae
ecology of knots
effects of cockle fisheries
