Research

The North Sea and Wadden Sea are two of the best studied seas in the world. There are institutes that perform fundamental scientific research, such as the NIOO and NIOZ, in order to understand how the ecosystem works, what the effects of climate change are and how the water currents begin. Other institutes, such as Wageningen IMARES and the RIKZ perform more applied studies to answer questions from the community or the government: do wind parks influence birds, how large is the seal population, how high are the waves in the North Sea. Various legislative measurement programs are also performed, which are related to European nature protection laws.
