Sea purslane

Sea purslane, not to be mixed up with sea sandwort which is also called sea purslane, is a common plant dependant upon a silty environment. This plant grows mostly outside the dikes. A very thick vegetation of sea purslane can form on the high ridges in the marshes. During periods of prolonged high tides, when the plant is under water for a long time, it will loose lots of its leaves which remain behind in the flood-mark.

Sea purslane is found along the coasts of the Mediterranean Sea region and West Europe; it is not found more northerly than England and Denmark. Sea purslane is fairly common in the delta and the wadden regions. Sea purslane is a characteristic species for the sea aster class and often grows together with sea wormwood.
